Constructing Truth—Part 1

“Who knows what’s really true anymore?”
“Fake news!”
“Stats can be manipulated to say anything.”
“Mainstream media is biased, do your research and don’t be in a bubble.”

Whether the subject is politics or COVID or who knows what else in our polarized world, social media has been peppered with statements like these. What has fascinated me is how often these statements are used to discredit or ignore or shut down any evidence that is contrary to the person’s view.

What would it look like to instead use diverse evidence as, maybe, a sort of scaffolding—as something to help construct a more robust explanation for the reality we live in?

What would it look like to assume bias in everything—but find ways to evaluate and weigh sources?

Might we actually find new perspectives which give a fuller expression of truth than where we currently are right now?

This is the journey many of us have been on for decades, and I think as a culture, it’s a journey we all need to take.
