Mission accomplished

1 hour, 44 minutes, and 54 seconds. I did it. 40 laps on my 40th birthday. And, since I ran in lane 4, I actually ran 10.5 miles, so I hit 10 minutes a mile almost exactly. Not nearly as fast as I wanted; but, considering a week ago I didn’t think I could finish, and considering I haven’t run longer than 40 minutes for 5 weeks due to sickness and my leg, I’m giving myself credit. I ran 3 miles farther than I ever have in my life, and I accomplished my goal.

About halfway...

Elaine took this picture about half way through the journey. Since I was running a lap for every year, I was saying to myself things like, “I’m 16 now. It’s 1984”. After Elaine took the picture, she joined me for a mile, and she had perfect timing: we ran together for the first 4 years of our marriage. 🙂

Me and my bride

The last two miles really hurt, and that’s when my time got pathetic. But hey, mission accomplished, now to Portland with my family!

  1. YAY!!!!!!!!! I’m so proud of you 🙂
Gonna stick with the running?? I think you need to be hitting the trails for your upcoming mountain climb!

    PS – HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  2. Gregg:

I used to be a distance runner. Some good sermon material in what you just did and a conversation with Hebrews 12 — running the race with perserverance … and we garner strength when we keep our eyes on focused on the goal of Jesus ….

    Good luck!

  3. I just posted a Happy Birthday message on your facebook-and I should have known better to look on your blog first to see an update about your run. Good for you for accomplishing your goal! I’m trying to be inspired by it rather than discouraged. At this point in my life I feel as if I can’t even imagine running that far. But I’ve got 5 years to get in shape… 🙂
Blessings to you on your special day!

  4. Thanks y’all! I’m going to stick with running, but I’m going to shift to shorter distances. I don’t enjoy the long stuff much. I’ll try asking Steve Sherwood for tips to train for the 1500, which is Talli’s favorite race. And no, Robin, I couldn’t beat her. Her best in the 1500 is 47 seconds faster than mine. Maybe if I train really hard AND I trip her…
