How do we construct coherent views of reality in a world of biased perspectives? How do we “make” truth that can help us live and act according to our values?
I’m 52 years old, and that puts me at sort of a pivot point for these things I’m trying to write about. Those younger than me have been subconsciously doing this sifting and constructing of truth for their whole lives. Those older than me have likely been screaming at me inside their heads for awhile, yelling that you don’t construct truth, you discover it!
I do think, however, there is a factor that can disrupt that clean division by age. American churches are very steeped in the idea of universal truth, truth that is revealed. As a result, heavily churched people—no matter how old they are—are more likely than the average person to struggle to sort out and evaluate bias.
I guess this is me trying to stake out a life of faith that can also wrestle with bias as we work to live according to our values.
