Cardiovascular depression

I know I’m out of shape…now I know just how much I’m out of shape.

Jogged with my daughter yesterday. From our house to the college track. things went ok, other than this interchange: “Does this feel slow to you, Talli?” “Well, yeah, we usually warm up faster than this.”

Rested up. Decided to try one 400 against her. She beat me.

Jogged home. Had to stop and walk twice.

My daughter is 11. E-lev-en! I discovered I couldn’t qualify for the sixth grade girls district track meet.

I figure I have a choice: either give up and sit on the couch with a half gallon of ice cream and chips ahoy for the next decade, or rise to the challenge.

I TAKE THE CHALLENGE!! I WILL WORK AND WORK UNTIL I CAN BEAT MY 11 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER IN THE 400!

Hey, a guy’s gotta have big goals, what can I say? (This is so embarrassing. If you would have told me when I was 11 that my big goal as an adult would be to beat an 11 year old girl, I might have asked you to just shoot me then.)

  1. I’m lookin for another racquetball partner for a day or two a week…great way to get in shape and fun. Interested?

  2. But how soon will she be twelve? It’s going to be hard to keep up with her over the next few years. Maybe you should just aim for being able to beat the next daughter when she turns eleven…

  3. Scott, one of my problems with exercise has been time. I tend to find myself running, very occasionally, at 10:30 at night. But thanks for the offer!

Starla, I’m pleased to report that I can DUST my almost 4 year old in a race to the nearest cookie.

Liz, I’d love to go climb! At this point, I’m committed to being with the kids so Elaine can go, but maybe it’s time to talk to grandparents.

Robin…two months from tomorrow, she’ll be twelve. My only prayer in this is that she’s been running track the past three months, so her window for improvement is fairly small. I, on the other hand, have LOTS of room for improvement!

  4. Hmmm…and then she’ll try out for cheerleading next…you can’t top that one, Dad…no matter how cool of a Cav you were…

  5. I can honestly say that my 13 y/o son has never beaten me arm wrestling…that’s because I knew when to stop accepting the challenge. 🙂
